Prostaglandin Analogues: The Science Behind Longer-Looking Lashes and Fuller-Looking Brows

When choosing an eyelash or eyebrow serum, it is natural to ask whether the ingredients are supported by meaningful evidence. Prostaglandin analogues have attracted considerable attention because they are among the most extensively investigated ingredients used in lash- and brow-enhancing formulations.

Although individual prostaglandin analogues and product formulations are not identical, clinical research involving ingredients such as latanoprost and bimatoprost provides encouraging evidence of their potential to improve visible lash and brow characteristics.

What are prostaglandin analogues?

Prostaglandin analogues are a group of compounds that have been studied for their effects on the hair-growth cycle. When used in targeted lash and brow formulations, they are intended to enhance characteristics such as visible length, density, thickness and darkness.

Their popularity is not based solely on anecdotal reports. Controlled clinical studies have investigated their use specifically on eyelashes and eyebrows.

Clinical research into eyelash enhancement

A 2023 study by Espinoza-Silva and colleagues evaluated latanoprost, a prostaglandin analogue, for eyelash enhancement. The three-month pilot study was randomized, double-blind and placebo-controlled, involving 30 healthy volunteers. Latanoprost was applied in a transparent mascara vehicle so that its effects could be compared with a placebo formulation.¹

The researchers reported that the latanoprost group experienced a significant increase in eyelash length and greater eyelash darkening compared with the placebo group. The study therefore provides positive clinical evidence that a prostaglandin analogue can improve visible eyelash characteristics when applied consistently over time.¹

This is particularly valuable because the study did not rely solely on participants’ impressions. It used a controlled design intended to distinguish the effect of the active ingredient from the effect of the mascara vehicle itself.

Clinical research into eyebrow enhancement

Positive findings have also been reported for eyebrows.

In a six-month randomized, double-blind, vehicle-controlled study, Suchonwanit and colleagues evaluated once-daily bimatoprost 0.01% in 40 people with eyebrow hypotrichosis, a term used to describe reduced eyebrow hair.²

The study found that bimatoprost produced significantly greater improvements in eyebrow hair density and hair diameter than the vehicle formulation.² These findings are especially relevant to people seeking brows that appear fuller and more defined, as the researchers assessed measurable characteristics of the eyebrow hairs rather than relying only on cosmetic appearance.

Together, the eyelash and eyebrow studies demonstrate that prostaglandin analogues have been investigated in controlled clinical settings for both areas.

Why formulation and consistency matter

The results of clinical research also highlight the importance of regular, continued application. The eyelash study assessed results over three months, while the eyebrow study continued for six months.¹ ² Lash and brow enhancement is therefore best viewed as a gradual process rather than an overnight transformation.

The formulation also matters. A well-designed serum must deliver its ingredients precisely to the lash line or brow area while remaining easy to use as part of a consistent daily routine.

It is equally important to recognise that studies on latanoprost or bimatoprost do not automatically prove that every prostaglandin analogue—or every finished cosmetic product—will produce identical results. The concentration, formulation, method of application and individual user can all influence the outcome.

Evidence-led lash and brow care

The growing interest in prostaglandin-based lash and brow products is supported by more than beauty trends. Controlled research has shown positive improvements in visible eyelash length and darkness, as well as eyebrow density and hair diameter.¹ ²

For consumers looking for an evidence-led approach to enhancing their natural lashes or brows, prostaglandin analogues represent an important and well-researched category of ingredients. While individual results may vary, the available research offers a compelling scientific basis for their continued use in targeted lash and brow formulations.
